What is retargeting?
Retargeting is advertising, or showing display ads, to people who have already indicated an interest in your brand by visiting your web site, but did not convert. Technically, you place a snippet of code on your website that creates a list of people that visit your site, or specific pages within your site, and allows AdRoll to display your ads to your potential customers as they visit other sites. Because AdRoll works with the largest ad exchanges, we can find your customers just about anywhere they might go online.
Do you like turtles?
I like turtles.
Will the AdRoll Smart Pixel affect my website’s load time?
If placed correctly (right before the “/body” in your site’s template) the AdRoll Smart Pixel will not negatively impact your website’s page load time. The pixel loads asynchronously after your web site's functionality.

How do I know if AdRoll’s service will work for my business?
AdRoll's banner advertising solutions will improve your website’s performance. AdRoll site targeted campaigns help you raise brand awareness and increase traffic to your site, while AdRoll retargeting helps you bring back lost visitors and increase conversions. Our advertisers are in many different industries, and we help SMB advertisers reach more customers and achieve higher ROI advertising by using our services. Our reporting dashboard allows you to track exactly how many impressions and clicks your campaigns are generating. You can see your ROI not only for each campaign, but also for each ad you create, down to each site placement. And, with our self-service tools, you can optimize your campaign at any time to help you improve performance. For advertisers spending over $1,000 a month, AdRoll provides a dedicated account manager.
What web sites will my ads appear on?
For site-targeted (contextual) campaigns, your ads will appear on the web sites that you decide on. AdRoll can also help you find more sites like the ones you find appropriate. For AdRoll Retargeting campaigns, your ads will appear on web sites that your customers frequent after they visit your site.
How much does advertising cost?
AdRoll uses a dynamic CPM (Cost per thousand impressions) pricing model. This means that our system will bid on the highest quality inventory at the lowest possible price. Since AdRoll uses a fixed margin we are able to pass any savings on to you, which makes AdRoll the most cost-effective display advertising solution available. Although pricing varies by brand and campaign, CPMs generally come in between $1 - $3.
How does the referral program work?
When you advertise with AdRoll, you can refer your friends to use our service, too! Because we value your good opinion, and recognize that you sent them our way, we'll pay you 5% of what they spend in their first year. Just click on the link in your Dashboard to invite friends to use AdRoll.
What are the differences between CPM, CPC, and CPA pricing models?
Dynamic CPM:
The simplest & most transparent model. We buy inventory on a CPM, add our fixed margin, and that is your cost. The reality is that all retargeting campaigns are purchased using CPM bids. Even Google bids on a CPM for their own inventory, they just translate it to a CPC for AdWords customers. Dynamic CPM is the most transparent and cost effective way to buy a retargeting campaign. We bid on a CPM basis, add on our fixed margin, and that is your cost. We call it dynamic because as we become more efficient with your campaign, the savings are passed on to you, maximizing your ROI. With our fixed margin you always know that you are paying a fair price. At the end of the day, it’s the only fully transparent way to buy advertising.

Fixed CPC* (Cost per Click):
You pay a fixed cost per click on your ads. CPC is great for search, but not so great for display. Unlike search where the inventory source is consistent (on a search results page), display ads can appear on many different kinds of sites and therefore there is a lot of disparity in the quality of clicks. Cheap clicks are easy to come by, but they do not always translate to quality prospects. Trying to achieve the lowest possible CPC can actually result in the lowest quality traffic. We offer this pricing model for clients who are looking for a simplified pricing model, but we recommend dCPM.

CPA* (Cost per Acquisition):
You pay a fixed cost per conversion. Paying directly for conversions sounds simple and appealing. However, the reality is that unless you have robust attribution tracking in place, you will overpay for conversions and increase your cost. Here’s a simple example. A user clicks on your search ad, leaves your site, then clicks on a retargeting ad and converts. If you’re paying CPA, you’ll have to pay for that conversion twice (search and retargeting), thus doubling your overall marketing cost. CPA pricing models also get confusing: view throughs, click throughs, smell throughs… at the end of the day, it’s simpler and more cost effective to use dynamic CPM and measure ROI however you see fit. We recommend using a simple A/B test that we can help you set up to measure true incremental conversions.

2. Getting Started

Is my pixel placed correctly?
Your AdRoll Smart Pixel should be placed right before the end body tag (/body) in your page HTML code or on your web site’s HTML template. Placing the pixel in this location will ensure accurate data gathering and will not negatively affect your page load time.
Can I serve the AdRoll Smart Pixel in an iFrame?
We do not recommend using a pixel in an iFrame, but it is certainly possible with additional technical expertise. Please contact us at support@adroll.com for more information if you'd like to use a pixel in an iFrame.
How does AdRoll billing work?
AdRoll bills you on a weekly basis. We will pre-charge your first week's budget before your campaign starts - this starts your AdRoll account balance. Every week your previous 7 days of deliveries will be deducted from your total AdRoll account balance. We will then charge your card to "replenish" your AdRoll account balance to its original level.
What ad sizes does AdRoll accept?
AdRoll accepts many different ad sizes, but the 3 most popular and effective ad sizes are: The leaderboard (728x90 pixels), rectangle (300x250 pixels), and the skyscraper (160x600 pixels). We recommend starting your campaign with these ad sizes for optimal campaign performance.

How does the free trial work?
We're very confident that retargeting works. We know it does because we run campaigns for over 1,000 advertisers and they tell us how happy they are. And we're willing to put our money where our mouth is, and pay for your first 2 weeks (or $60.00 in advertising)-- completely free with no commitment. If you don't think retargeting makes sense for you after looking at the results, then you can walk away.

Please note that the free trial is only for AdRoll retargeting (not for site targeted or behavioral targeting). To be eligible for the trial, you just need to have over 1,000 website visitors per month. In order to get started, sign up and place the AdRoll pixel on your website. Then upload some ads or contact us to help create ads. Once the pixel and ads are in place then you can utilize AdRoll to reach your previous website visitors and bring them back to convert to sales. **Please note that we reserve the right to reduce the traffic once 30,000 impressions are reached on the trial — otherwise our investors would get mad at us for spending too much money!

How should my ads be formatted?
AdRoll accepts ad files as JPEGs, static and animated GIFs, and flash. Ads should be no more than 45KB in file size. If ads are animated, they should stop animating within 30 seconds.

4. Troubleshooting

Why hasn’t my campaign kicked off yet?
Once AdRoll approves a campaign, it is sent over to our partner ad networks for them to review and approve. This process generally takes 2-4 business days. Also, please note that for AdRoll Retargeting your user retargeting list much reach 1,000 people before your campaign will commence.
What is a clickTAG error?
The clickTAG is a parameter used in flash banner ads, and helps define the destination URL from the rest of the coding. Our clickTAG checker does a very simple confirmation to ensure that the click tag is spelled exactly as seen: clickTAG. If you are receiving a clickTAG error, it is due to at least one of the following: clickTAG is not spelled correct; "click" is not in all lower case; "TAG" is not in all uppercase; there is a space between "click" and "TAG."
